Description
Joseph Floch (1894-1977)
Portrait of a Young Boy
Signed lower right
Oil on canvas
23 ½ x 19 inches
Framed: 29 x 25 inches
Provenance: Peretz Hirschbein (acquired in Berlin in the 1920’s)
By descent to the present owner.
Joseph Floch (1894-1977), was born in Vienna and travelled widely before settling in Paris in 1925, where he joined his friend Willie Eisenschitz and a growing group of Jewish émigré artists. He exhibited at the Salons and was chosen in 1929 for a solo exhibition at the prestigious Galerie Berthe Weill. In France his paintings were acclaimed, particularly his subdued figure portraits which distilled a sense of loneliness and a tender, dream-like quality. Following Hitler’s occupation of Paris he was forced to leave his second home and in 1941 he finally managed to emigrate to New York.
Peretz Hirshbein was born in 1880 in Grodno, Poland. He is recognized as the author of some of the finest works ever written for the Yiddish theater, earning broad recognition as the “Yiddish Maeterlinck”. His plays, which often espoused a Symbolist style, and his influential travelling theater troupe made him a star of the golden age of Yiddish theater. He also worked in film and died in Los Angeles in 1948.
