ILYA TABENKIN RUSSIAN OIL PAINTING OF COMPOSITION ON BOARD. Size 16 in. by 23 in.Ilya Tabenkin (1914-1988) was born in the Belarusian town of Mozyr. At the age of seventeen he entered the Moscow Art School and later the Moscow Art Institute. Upon completion the artist works in line with the traditional Moscow school, creates landscapes that are contemplative pictures of Russian life. As the artist's son Leo recalls: "Tabenkin was not included in the youth circles in which nonconformist art was born... Social revolt and the dominant position in culture have never been his goal - art alone."‎‎In the 1960s, Tabenkin made his first formalistic works, where the main thing is color, which serves as a means of conveying an emotional experience close to a mystical vision of the world. In 1968, the artist, along with Karl Friedman, Viktor Popkov and Evgeny Rastorguyev, participated in the exhibition "Group of Sixteen." Tabenkin is still absolutely figurative, but already at the turn of the sixties and seventies the artist radically changes the creative paradigm: Tabenkin turns to the genre of abstract still life. Approaching the sixty-year-old milestone, he begins the artistic path anew. ‎The genesis of his abstract still lifes, unique in domestic art, continues to surprise art historians and critics. ‎Recognition came to the artist in 1988 - his works were selected by Sotheby's experts to participate in the famous auction of Russian art in Moscow. Shortly thereafter, he was gone.
