Description
'Cuirassier de la Garde Imperiale dans le Jardin' (Imperial Guard Horseman in the Garden) oil on board, signed by Francois Emile De Lansac lower right. Circa 1870. Dimensions : 10.25'' X 8.5'' without frame, 14'' X 16'' with frame. Born in Tulle, Lansac studied under Ary Scheffer then specialized in portraits, military scenes and historical subjects. He participated regularly at the Salon des artistes français from 1827 until 1878, was awarded a third-class medal in 1836 and a second class medal in 1838. His works can be viewed at museums such as Musee de Versailles, and Musée de l'Armée at the Invalides in Paris. Strong demand for Lansac works is demonstrated by such recorded sales as the sale price of $10,500 for lot # 176 "Napoléon s'exposant en soldat aux combats d'Arcis-sur-Aube" (1814) (Napoleon exposing himself as a soldier in combat at Arcis-sur-Aube) at Tajan auction house, Paris on December 16th, 1996.
