The Ghaznavid dynasty was a Persian-Muslim dynasty of Turkic origin that ruled much of central Asia from 975 to 1187 CE. The Ghaznavid state was centered in Ghazni, a city in present day Afghanistan. Mahmud of Ghazni was the first Islamic ruler to use the title of "sultan" from his ascension in 999 CE until his death in 1030 CE. Mahmud is often portrayed as a devout follower of Islam and was the most prominent ruler of the Ghaznavid and turned the former provincial city of Ghazni into a very wealthy capital of an extensive empire that encompassed Afghanistan, most of Iran, Pakistan and regions of North-West India. Although the Ghaznavid dynasty only lasted just over 200 years, due to Mahmud’s expansions Muslims were to hold sway over much of central Asia and northern India for over 700 years, until the arrival of the British.
