North America, United States, Chicopee, Massachusetts, ca. 1860 to 1865 CE. A fine Civil War era carbon steel cavalry sword with a brass guard and steel scabbard. The blade is slightly curved and fits into the scabbard that has two rings for attaching. The hilt is covered by a leather and wood grip with a twisted brass wire. Upon one side of the ricasso is the makers' mark: "AMES MFG" and on the other side is "US ADK" and the year (partially indiscernible). "ADK" are initials and mark for the inspector Andrew D. King who was an inspector for the Ames Manufacturing Company from 1840 to 1865. The pommel is brass and has numbers stamped upon this area as well. A leather washer seals the guard of the blade. This type of sword was first created in 1860 for light cavalry and was used by the Union army during the American Civil War. A wonderful example and a must have for collectors of military history! Stamped marks are faint and partially indiscernible, including part of the year mark. Blade is still sharp with minor nicks and patina. Leather and wood grip is chipping and cracking with losses. Heavy patina on scabbard and modern wires tied to rings for suspension.
