Description
Japanese Woodblock Print, 1920, this is a later edition sanctioned by Goyo's heirs and published by Yuyudo using the same exacting standards of Goyo's original. Full title is "Waitress with a Red Tray (Portrait of Onao, a Maid at the Matsuyoshi Inn, Kyoto)"
SIZE IN INCHES: oban, 11.25 x 16.25 inches
COMMENTS: Image of a young waitress holding a red lacquer tray. She is kneeling wearing a winter kimono tied with a colored obi. A classic Goyo bijin image on a silver mica background.
HASHIGUCHI GOYO (1880-1921) is one of the most celebrated shin hanga artists, particularly renowned for his woodblock prints of beautiful women, also known as bijin-ga. The design and carving of Goyo's prints is technically masterful, and they were lavishly printed, often with pearlescent mica backgrounds. Goyo's production standards were so high that only woodblock prints of superior quality were allowed to be sold and distributed. Although Goyo died in his artistic prime, having produced only a small number of woodblock prints, his work is regarded by many to be the finest bijin-ga of the twentieth century. Because of their rarity and extraordinary beauty, portrait prints by Hashiguchi Goyo are among the most highly prized of all shin hanga prints.
