Description
Two pieces of mostly chrysocolla (a copper silicate mineral) with occurrences of azurite, malachite. One is labeled KCC / NEVADA / TRIPP-VETERAN PIT // Chrysocolla / Chalcocite / Ore /, and is approx. 4.75 x 3 x 2 inches and 557.8 ounces. Daniel Jackling began open-pit mining in the Veteran Pit near the towns of Ruth and Ely, Nevada, in 1905 under Nevada Consolidated Copper Corporation. The Tripp and Veteran Mines that were acquired by Kennecott 1950, and they began mining those two properties in the late 1960s when their adjacent Liberty Pit played out. The second chrysocolla specimen, ~5.75 x 2 x 5 inches, ~3 pounds, is unlabeled but came with the same collection of minerals from this consignor. It has been cut flat on two sides, perhaps to be used as a bookend. It may have been given a thin coat of lacquer to preserve the appearance of the chrysocolla, which otherwise tends to darken over time as the mineral dehydrates.Date: Country (if not USA): State: NevadaCity: RuthProvenance: William Mayrsohn Collection
