1876 George Washington & American Independence Ribbon
1876-Dated, American Centennial George Washington Stevensgraph Commemorative Silk Ribbon, Sullivan-Fischer GW-33, Display mounted, Extremely Fine
This colorful, large woven ribbon measures 11.25" x about 2" and is housed in a Plexiglas holder tied shut with a narrow ribbon for display. Listed in Sullivan-Fischer as GW-33. This is the rarer lengthened version of GW-31, featuring a gray and black portrait of Washington at top, surrounded by blue, pink, and gold framing, with the names of the 13 colonies, and a quote: "These United Colonies Are And Ought To Be Free And Independent States." In the middle is an ornate zigzag banner inscribed: "IN COMMEMORATION OF / THE CENTENNIAL OF / AMERICAN / INDEPENDENCE." At the top of the ribbon is an heraldic eagle and banner. The bottom has a shield, "E Pluribus Unum," and laurel and oak branches. Made by B.B. Tilt and Sons, New York, 1876. Well-preserved, with some light tone at top and some barely visible foxing at bottom. Includes a small, descriptive typewritten note about it attached inside its custom holder.
