Philadelphia Parade held April 21st, 1789 to Honor First President George Washington MASS. CENTINEL Reported
May 2, 1789-Dated Newspaper, THE MASSACHUSETTS CENTINEL, with historic news of the April 21st Parade held in Philadelphia to Honor George Washington America's First President, Inaugurated April 30, 1789, Choice Very Fine.
This complete four page Newspaper is disbound, measures 16" x 9.5" and has a front page "Song" written for President George Washington when he arrived in Philadelphia on April 21, 1789. For his arrival a parade escorted him with cavalry, a thirteen gun salute, and fireworks. George Washington rode in on his impressive white horse. Washington was Inaugurated on April 30, 1789 and this newspaper was printed just 3 days afterwards. On page 3, column 1 has the speech by Washington to the important people gathered in Philadelphia, giving his thanks for their kind treatment. Signed in type, "G. WASHINGTON." Includes a short notice from the Kingston [Jamaica] Gazette newspaper: "A Girl of sixteen absconded from here master; she is branded with letters on each shoulder, a yolk with a padlock on her neck and marked with a whip on her back". Overall, nice and clean save for some minor scattered foxing. A historic newspaper surrounding the preliminary events and celebrations prior to the Inauguration.
