Description
Likely Gustav Vichy, c. 1880. Standing doll with a Jumeau swivel socket bisque head with fixed glass brown eyes, painted lashes and brows, long brown hair. On composite body with internal mechanism, toggle on/off switch and wind-up key at side. Dressed in lace pantalons, brown velvet skirt and jacket, brown shirt with lace jabot, high kid leather boots with pearl buttons and silk at feet, and a velvet tricorn hat with feather. Fastened to a velvet platform, holding a portable theatre with a circus scene, drumsticks, and carrying a drum around the neck. Imprinted "12" on back of neck, the Bebe Triste model by Jumeau. Label under stage outlines the three tunes playable: La Cour et la Main [word illegible], La Princess de la Canaries and Le Joue et la Nuit. Initials engraved on key appear to be GV. France, late 19thc.

When activated the circus figures on the stage perform, the doll's head moves and the arm holding the drumsticks move toward and away from the drum while music plays.
