Description
(Disney, 1950-64) A segment of original track from the Carolwood Pacific Railroad, Walt Disney's personal backyard miniature railroad at his Holmby Hills estate. Inspired by friends Ollie Johnson and Ward Kimball, who themselves created personal railroads, Walt Disney turned his lifelong fascination with trains into the Carolwood Pacific, which boasted 2,615 feet of track and a 1:8 scale live steam locomotive named Lilly Belle, after his wife Lillian. This actual segment of the 7 1/4" gauge track over which Walt drove his engine is complete with rails, ties, and spikes. In 1964, with his theme park in full swing, Walt decided to have the Carolwood Pacific track dismantled. Following its removal from his estate, this track segment was framed over an added bed of rocks representative of the original terrain. A photo of Walt and the Carolwood Pacific as well as a commemorative plaque are displayed within the frame. The track measures 22"x13" and the frame is 30"x18" and 3" deep. The track is in good condition with expected age, weathering, and oxidation from over a decade of outdoor use. The frame exhibits some surface wear to both the wood and the glass.
