Description
Glenn Miller
Signed World War II Sailor's Cap. A white HMS Belfast sailor's cap with a black band naming the ship, signed "Glenn Miller" in ink on the top. 9 1/2 x 8 x 3 inches. Some staining to the top and light wear.
At the peak of his career in 1942, trombonist and bandleader Glenn Miller attempted to join the Navy but was denied; he subsequently persuaded the Army to allow him to "be placed in charge of a modernized Army band." Miller earned the rank of captain and was eventually made a major. Miller's band would perform and record throughout the war and he is noted as a great patriot and it was likely during his time in London that this cap was signed for an English sailor. On December 15, 1944 Miller was set to fly from Bedford to Paris in order to make arrangements to move the band there; unfortunately, the plane disappeared over the English Channel and Miller was lost, presumed dead. This signed cap is not only evocative of those war-date performances which so greatly encouraged American and English servicemen alike but also of the great patriotic service of Glenn Miller.
