Item Details
Description
5th-4th century BC. A translucent yellow agate cylinder seal, drilled vertically for suspension; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a typed and signed scholarly note issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'The design shows a lion attacking a stag from behind, which is turning its head back to face the attacker. A tree forms a terminal. This is an Achaemenid seal, c. 450-350 B.C., from some part of the western Achaemenid empire. It is a rare type and nicely engraved, but the stone is cracked and worn.' 4 grams, 23mm (1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number T-981; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; and accompanied by a copy of a typed and signed scholarly note by the Professor.
