Description
William Simpson (British, 1823-1899). Original 1855 lithograph. Titled, "Sebastopol from the 26 Gun Battery on the Extreme Right of French Attack," depicting one of the classic sieges in military history, and the final episode in the Crimean War. Decorated with figures of soldiers digging trenches in the snow, with a distant view of Sevastopol, during the winter of 1854/1855. Originally published on March 20, 1855 as part of “Colnaghi’s Authentic Series: The Seat of the War in the East.” Various printers’ marks, including PAUL & DOMINIC COLNAGHI & CO., PUBLISHERS TO HER MAJESTY QUEEN VICTORIA, and DAY & SON, LITHOGRAPHERS TO THE QUEEN. Includes Certificate of Authenticity from The Map House, London, U.K. and background information on artist and work (attached to verso). Presented in a decorative linen matte and elegantly framed. Work Size: 13 x 17.75 in.
