Description
The graphite drawing on paper titled THE U.S. FRIGATE SAVANAH. STRUCK BY A SQUALL OFF THE CAPE HORN JUNE 25TH 1847. The artist, William C. Philbrick, misspelled the ship's name. Philbrick is listed as a watercolorist in Brewington's 'Dictionary of marine Artists.' The Savannah was built in in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and launched on May r, 1842. She served as flagship for the Pacific Squadron on a three year mission to South America and was struck by squall on the way around the Horn during her voyage home.
Measures 16.5 x 20.5 inches.
