Highly collectible Gibson Girl original image, published in 1905. Charles Dana Gibson fashioned a new, modern look for women of the 1890s and early 1900s. His art established a lasting style (The Gibson Girl) that were topical and compelling. He gave a confident and self-reliant look to women, thus making them appear modern—a look that still resonates to this day. His women, lovely and aloof--yet intelligent—always seemed to have a step up on the men he drew. His unique black and white drawings were presented exactly as he drew them in a series of large format books published around the turn of the 20th century. Not many of the original plates from those books survive. This example, however, is one of the authentic plates from those books. It is printed in sharp, black and white line on good paper. Later halftone editions failed to capture the crispness and subtle character of his art. In these original plates the blacks are dense black, the finer lines are true to Gibson’s original drawings. Here, in this example, we have a strikingly beautiful woman, true to how she would have looked in his original drawing. It is one of the better Charles Dana Gibson original images attainable. Great impression with few extremely light and tiny spots. 8.25 x 9 on 11 x 17 sheet.
