Vernon Howe Bailey (American, 1874-1953). "Old Houses, Wynch Street" ink drawing, 1901. Signed, titled, and dated in ink on lower right. A quaint ink drawing of vernacular homes lining Wynch Street in London at the turn of the 20th century. In addition to the charming facades, we see two gentlemen engaged in a conversation beside a horse-drawn carriage, another gentleman in a suit walking toward them on the sidewalk, and another wearing derby hat before a doorway up ahead. Vernon Howe Bailey studied art at the Pennsylvania Museum School and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He began his career working as an artist for the Philadelphia Times and the Boston Herald. Next he spent several years in Europe living and working prior to being hired by the US Government to create wartime illustrations at Navy yards, ammunition factories, etc. In addition to his Navy illustrations, his architectural drawings were very popular.
