19th century American Portrait School, possibly Cephas Thompson, Portraits of William Penn Stanton, Silversmith and his wife Mary Horton Walker, c. late 1820s, oil on board, unsigned, 31.5 x 24.5 and 29.5 x 23.5 inches, in brown wood frames 37 x 30 inches. William Penn Stanton (1794-1878) and his wife Mary Horton Walker (1795-1890) were married in Providence, RI in 1818. Stanton was a silversmith, watchmaker and jeweler and eventually moved his business to Rochester, NY in 1829 where he continued to work until the 1870s. According to family records, these portraits were painted while the married couple still lived in Rhode Island, i.e. 1818-1828.
Condition
Overall good condition, wear to edges, thin layer of surface dust, evidence of inpainting to sitter's faces, more so on female portrait.
