The Portrait of William Hartley's Wife, oil on canvas, 20 x 16 7/8 inches, signed lower right. Note: Major William Hartley was an American representative of the Colt Manufacturing Company. He went to Italy in the 19th century to meet Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi in the pursuit of selling him arms for the revolution at the time. While there, he met Cornelius Krieghoff, the famed Canadian painter and they became friends. Krieghoff just finished painting a portrait of his wife. Hartley was so taken by the portrait that he purchased it from Krieghoff and brought it back to the US. He then had a companion portrait of his wife painted by Sanuel Waugh, of which Pridham’s is offering in this sale. The Krieghoff was sold by the family through Sotheby’s many years ago.
