Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), Nopiloa type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beautiful pottery figure depicting a standing aristocrat covered with white kaolin pigment that is topped with vibrant pigment in hues of coral, sage, marigold, and cobalt. The figure wears a segmented belt and a massive pectoral amulet between multi-paneled shoulder pads, discoid earrings, and an enormous headdress with a pair of lateral panels and a top feathered element. The face is decorated with downcast eyes and pouty lips, and the figure stands with arms atop the amulet in a dignified manner. Size: 4" W x 6.875" H (10.2 cm x 17.5 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; purportedly ex-Butterfields, San Francisco, California, 1980s

Condition
Small area of repair to right forearm, with chips and very light adhesive residue along break lines. Loss to areas of right foot and right headdress panel as shown. Nicks and abrasions to headdress, face, body, and limbs, with chipping and fading to pigmentation, and light encrustations. Great preservation to kaolin and pigment.
