Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz) culture, Nopiloa style, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A wonderful mold-formed pottery figure of a lord in a hue of pale orange. The ancient nobleman is dressed in a long robe giving him a square shape, and a broad collar necklace as an elaborate plumed headdress sits atop his head. Flanked by two sizable ear spools, the hollow figure exhibits bulging eyes, a broad nose, and a full lips. Nopiloan art exists as a blend or cross between regular Vera Cruz and Maya figures. Typically they are mold made and resemble the Botero versions of Jaina figures, but are usually larger, with softer features and details. They are extremely thin-walled for their size, so their lightness is often surprising. Size: 4.875" W x 5" H (12.4 cm x 12.7 cm)
Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

Condition
Expected surface wear with nicks/chips, softening of detail, and abraded areas, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with earthen and manganese deposits.
