Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas, San Pedro culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A charming blackware pottery stirrup vessel adorned with the highly stylized form of a falcon. Exhibiting a voluminous body upon a round yet stable base, the ancient vessel features a hemispherical head of a falcon at its top, displaying a curved beak, target-motif eyes, and a pair of petite, pointed ears. The body of the vessel is incised with a lovely geometric pattern representing the body of the bird in profile, consisting of a rectangular wing, a leg with carefully delineated toes, and four tailfeathers. A conical spout surmounts the fine vessel, which is connected to the falcon's head via a ribbon-like bridge, forming a handle. Size: 6.125" in diameter x 6.25" H (15.6 cm x 15.9 cm)
