19th Century Sevres Porcelain Cup and Saucer Painted with Insects and Fairies. A most unusual cup and saucer, the delightful polychrome-enamelled dancing insects and fairies with butterflies on this demitasse set were almost certainly painted on white Sevres seconds by a skilled and enterprising independent decorator. Both items are painted with gilt dentil rims. The cup with green S 54 with a strike through the mark, indicating it was a second. Various incised marks near footrim. The saucer with green S 58 with a strike through the mark, indicating it was a second. Various incised marks. Sevres, France. Probably painted in Paris. The porcelain 1854 and 1858. The decoration later, probably closer to 1880. {2 5/8" H., 3 1/2" W. at handle, the cup. 4 3/4" Diameter, the saucer}. Property from the Estate of Arthur Thomson, San Francisco, CA. The cup has a 3" long very tight hairline to the body, and gilding wear to the dentil band. The saucer in good condition.
