The Great Race (1965) Professor Fate's Hannibal Twin-8 W/Scissor Lift (Exhibited W/Documentation) - This incredible piece of historical film memorabilia is the iconic Hannibal Twin-8 car used during the filming of the 1965 American comedy film, The Great Race, starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Natalie Wood, inspired by the actual 1908 New York to Paris Race. The film cost $12 million to make, the equivalent to $98.36 million today, making it the most expensive comedy film at the time. The film details the rivalry between two competing daredevils, The Great Leslie (Tony Curtis) and Professor Fate (Jack Lemmon), and an automobile race from New York City to Paris. In the film, The Webber Motor Car Company builds a new car named "The Leslie Special" for The Great Leslie, while Professor Fate builds his own vehicle, "The Hannibal Twin-8." There were five Hannibal Twin-8s made for the film, some "standard" that operated like normal vehicles, and other "trick cars" fitted with various special effects such as a scissor-lift, smoke screen, cannon and heat beam. It is said that the Hannibal 8 cost upwards of $150,000 to build at the time, which was around three times what the average house was selling for at the time. This particular Hannibal Twin-8 has the scissor-lift function.
