779A.Stars of the Photoplay. Photoplay was a Hollywood movie fan magazine, founded in 1911which reigned supreme in the 1920s and 1930s, with a canny mix of studio tie-ins and an “independent” editorial voice. While co-operation from the industry allowed Photoplay access to stars and sets, campaigning editorials claimed to speak for the fans. Beginning in 1920, Photoplay gave out what is considered the first significant annual movie award, the Photoplay Medal of Honor. The award was voted on by readers of the magazine and the producer of the winning film was presented with a gold medallion struck by Tiffany. Offered here is the 1930, Stars of Photoplay, book featuring 5 ½” x 6 ¼” sepia portraits and biographies of the 258 nominees. A collector has obtained the signature of 110 of the stars. .Some portraits have been inscribed to “Carteles”, some also have tape repairs with staining. Several pages are detached and several are back to back.
