Description
Flemish school from the second half of the 17th century."View of the port of Amsterdam".Oil on canvas. Relined painting.Measurements: 95 x 146 cm; 104 x 155 cm (frame). On this occasion we present a magnificent view of the port of Amsterdam in which a nautical scene is reproduced in detail, reflecting the very powerful foreign trade and the large naval fleet of Holland. The imposing ship crowned by Dutch flags, with its sails swollen by the wind, approaches the quay while fighting against the voracious movement of the tumultuous waves, with the city of Amsterdam in the background. It is a scene immersed in the dynamism and movement that characterized this type of Flemish compositions, in which other smaller vessels appear to complete the careful composition. To accentuate the drama and commotion of the scene, the painter plunges the foreground into darkness, giving the waters of the sea a dark and ominous tone, which lightens in the background, reinforcing the construction of the space in depth. The masts, sails and flags of the ships in the foreground, as well as those docked in the harbor, also contribute to this construction of the scenery, and are worked in a precise, draftsmanlike style. In fact, the scene in general is treated with a descriptive and highly narrative language. This is due to the genre itself, since the main purpose of this painting is to relate a historical fact, and not to capture the beauty of nature. The aforementioned dark sea is joined by the proliferation of characters, such as the crews of nearby ships, perfectly represented leaning over the side. Landscape painting acquired a remarkable importance in the Netherlands from the second half of the 17th century and throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. At this time artists produced both urban views or architectural interiors where the human presence was non-existent or completely secondary, as well as rural or country landscapes and seascapes.
