Description
A rare pair of hand carved wooden ear spools embellished with a shell disc. Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1450 AD. The shell appears to be abalone shell. Personal ornamentation was a mark of status for ancient Peruvian cultures, and sizeable ear ornaments like these were reserved for nobles. In fact, when the Spanish invaded Peru, they called the Inca elite "Orejones" meaning big-eared. The Ear Spools measure 1 7/8 inches long x 1.25 inches wide. Provenance: The Dr Brian Healy estate, New York.
