Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, done in the Post-Impressionist style of Paul Gauguin (French, 1848-1903). Image depicts a woman in an elegant gown that is printed with large, scrolling white flowers. She sits in a lush scene of tropical color and thick growth. Hand-painted inscription at lower left corner. Framed dimensions approximately 17.5" x 14".
Paul Gauguin (French, 1848-1903) did not enjoy critical success during his lifetime, but is now recognized as a fundamental proponent of Synthetism, a successor of Impressionism. Gauguin spent a decade in French Polynesia, where the native people and surrounding landscape became definitive sources of inspiration. In addition to being a gifted painter, Gauguin was also a ceramicist, writer, sculptor, and printmaker.
