Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Schouten Island, Abelam peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A large wooden pounder with a bulbous head and a short handle. The heavy, globular head is slightly flat on the top, likely from pounding and grinding. The tip of the handle features an integral loop, perhaps for suspension or additional ornamentation. The whole piece is covered with a nice dark patina. Size: 10" L x 5" W (25.4 cm x 12.7 cm); 11.5" H (29.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Several small inactive insect holes. Stable hairline fissures on head. Age and use commensurate surface abrasions. Wonderful patina!
