Description
West Africa, Nigeria, Ijo people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large and impressive wooden ceremonial mask, with zoomorphic and anthropomorphic features surmounted by a large headdress. The human portion of the face is comprised of round protruding eyes, a triangular nose, arching brows, and an angular chin. The zoomorphic additions include a small incised mouth and teeth on the underside of the chin, much like a quadruped. The curved superstructure looks like a pair of large horns or antlers, like an antelope. The Ijo are maritime people who live along the coast and rivers of the Niger delta, and water spirits known as owuamapu play an important role in religious beliefs. Celebrations with masked dancers are held to honor these spirits, and masks, like this example often combine stylized human and animal features. Several perforations along the edge of this mask allowed it to be worn on the forehead. A wonderful example that has developed a rich patina! Size: 11.25" W x 22.75" H (28.6 cm x 57.8 cm); 29.5" H (74.9 cm) on included custom stand.
