Description
West Africa, probably Ghana, likely originating in Western Europe, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A group of three attractive necklaces constructed with petite glass beads in various shades of blue. The first necklace features 28 spherical beads of opaque, light blue hues; the second necklace has 20 lozenge-shaped beads made from semi-translucent blue glass; and the largest necklace exhibits 56 faceted beads of deep, cobalt blue colors. Trade beads played a significant role in the age of European exploration and colonization and served as currency pieces on multiple continents. Size of largest (faceted beads): 23" L (58.4 cm)
