Description
EARLY RICHMOND, VIRGINIA BASEBALL PLAYER CABINET PHOTOGRAPH, albumen print on photographer's board, depicting a standing player, probably a pitcher, his right arm raised in the throwing motion holding a ball, wearing his uniform lettered "VIRGINIA(S)" for the Richmond Virginias team. Card bears a photographer's stamp for Foter, Campbell & Co., 525 Broad St., Richmond, VA to front and back. Circa 1884. 8 1/4" x 4" OA.
Excellent condition with crisp image, tiny fold to top right corner of print.
Provenance: Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.
Catalogue Note: This photo was likely taken in 1884, the only year that the Richmond Virginias were part of the American Association professional baseball league. We could locate no other image of a player in this uniform.
