1909-13 M101-2 Sporting News Supplement Ty Cobb & Honus Wagner PSA 1.5 (Presents Higher) ScarceOut of all the 8x10 supplements inserted into The Sporting News from 1909-13, none are more desired than the March 17, 1910, piece featuring Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. This legendary photo features the two greatest ball players of the early 1900's in the prime of their Hall of Fame careers. It wasn’t until the 1909 World Series that the pair faced each other in their first official game. Cobb had won the American League Triple Crown in 1909 while Wagner led the National League in hitting. You would expect the two were rivals in 1909 however, the opposite was true. After the Pirates won the World Series that year, Cobb invited Wagner to join him on an outdoors trip that winter. Because these blank-backed supplements were printed on extremely thin paper, the few that have survived typically become brittle with age and are almost impossible to find in even average or better condition. Against all odds, this razor sharp example managed to survive in fantastic shape for over a century. The supplement presents in a crisp manner front and back with pack fresh qualities and eye appeal and the corners and edges showing little to no wear. With such immaculate presentation, one would predict a grade far superior than its 1.5 designation from PSA. Either this example was misgraded or maybe it’s the fact that in recent years it has become impossible to receive grades higher than a 1 on nearly every supplement graded. The small handful of supplements graded higher in my opinion do not even compare to this near-perfect example. The piece comes encapsulated in a PSA jumbo holder and just came back from grading a few months ago. The previous collector of this rare item protected and preserved this iconic piece of baseball history for almost 60 years after it was passed down from his uncle (the original owner).
