Description

"North Western America, Showing the Territory Ceded by Russia to the United States,” by S. Augustus Mitchell from his 1873 New General Atlas. After purchasing Alaska from the Russian government in 1867, Americans wanted to strike it rich in the gold fields. Gold was first discovered in Alaska in the 1860s, but in the 1870s the Alaskan Gold Rush began to pick up real steam in the Southeastern region. In 1882, gold was discovered in Sitka, marked here on the map as Sitka or New Archangel (its Russian name). Another gold rush occurred along the Stikine River in British Columbia, specifically in the Cassiar Gold District or present-day Wrangell. Miners were earning over a hundred dollars a day in that region, a small fortune in those days. The Cassiar Gold District would be prosperous for the remainder of the decade, but petered out by 1880. Clean with small stain at left margin. Tiny edge tear. Top edge of paper rough where removed from book. Very light toning to extreme paper edges. 11.5 x 14.
