Maps from a Dealer's Private Collection
An eclectic mix of items from a seller who collects only authentic, original maps. There are no reprints of any kind—they are all original engravings, lithographs or other type of image printed in the 19th century or earlier. All hand coloring, unless stipulated, is original and was executed at the time the map was produced by artisans of that era. Most of the maps in this sale have never been offered anywhere before.
Within this sale are scarce maps that rarely show up at auction, or are available anywhere. The huge Civil War wall map ColtonÂ’s New Topographical Map of the States of Virginia, Maryland and Delaware is generally found only in specialized collections. This example is extremely scarce--it is a rare variant of the 1864 version of this map. No other copies of this variant published by H. P. Cooper were found when this sale was researched.
Another exceedingly rare map being offered is the c1780s map of the United States by M. H. and J. W. Allen, in which the short-lived state of Franklinia is depicted. Within the map collecting community there is a very short list of maps that show this aberration--this map is so scarce, it does not show up on that list.
J. M. AtwoodÂ’s scarce 1855 pocket map Western States of America is yet another prize in this unusual sale. This wonderful antique pocket map has never been trimmed, and retains its full, original size, as published by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning.
Finally, included in this sale is a huge book from 1709 containing 80 exquisitely detailed full-page engravings by Richard Blome, including a map showing California as an island. This leatherbound book is a spectacular example of the bookbinderÂ’s art. It is a gem that will be the centerpiece of any collection.
