Item Details
Description
Rare and unusual map of the United States showing early borders of various states. The seller has not been able to locate another copy of this map. The map appears to either be a source for, or copy of, a couple of maps, including the very scarce 1806 Wilkinson map showing treaty confirmations of 1783. However, there are several areas of the map that have been resolved by the Wilkinson map, so that suggests an earlier print date. Another map that appears to be extremely similar is the Scott map of the United States from the first United States Gazetteer in 1795. Several other clues point to the map being published in the late 18th century. The State of Franklinia is clearly shown in eastern Tennessee, which here is spelled “Tennassee.” This map is not on the very short list of known maps that depict Franklinia. New Iberia (early Louisiana) shown near New Madrid. Indiana Company, Army Company and Ohio Company were attempts by wealthy landowners to establish various states and are not shown on many maps. Georgia is shown encompassing all of present-day Alabama and Mississippi. Georgia was the last state to cede western lands, which it did in 1802. Vermont is in an extremely unusual configuration. Maine is still part of Massachusetts. One of the more telling clues are the Illinois and Wabash Companies still shown as separate entities. They merged in 1779, thus suggesting the map pre-dates that merger. However, Franklinia wasn’t proposed until at least 1782, so it would have to be no earlier than that. Map published by M. H. and J. W. Allen of Dublin, Ireland. William Allen was the most important print seller in late Georgian Dublin. Beginning in the 1770's he issued Irish views, portraits, copies of prints issued in London, the occasional map and later, satires. Excellent color with very wide margins. Numerous repairs to paper margins, including a few small places where paper was replaced. Some tears near center of map have also been repaired and conserved. All repairs reversible and done in accordance with conservator’s guidelines. Map frame 11.75 x 14.5 (14.25 x 18.375 paper).
