Description
Encampment of Riders
Oil on canvas
15 x 21 1/4 in. (38.1 x 54cm)
PROVENANCE:
Private Collection, South Carolina.
NOTE:
The present work appears to be a free, lossely inspired copy after at least two original Wouwerman compositions, both engraved by Jan de Visscher. The figure group on the left hand-side of the print has been copied, in a simplified and inverted manner, into our painting. The tents behind them however are different from those depicted in the Visscher print and instead appear to be based on Soldiers at an Army Camp by Wouwerman (now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). The smaller figures seated on the left are reminiscent of another Visscher print, itself based after Soldier at an Army Camp by Wouwerman (Buckingham Palace, London).
We wish to thank the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, also known as R.K.D, for their kind assistance in cataloguing the present lot.
