Joshua Reynolds was an important 18th-century English painter most-known for his portrait illustrations of English royals and military officers. This set features instructional treatises on art, art history, and anecdotes on painting. It gives details on painting portraits as well as the human form, giving character to a sculpture, how to define contrasts in color, and what qualities excellent art must contain. This fine 1824 three-volume edition includes an English translation of Charles du Fresnoy’s famous treatise ‘The Art of Painting’, translated by William Mason.
