‘The Laws of Contrast of Colour’ is an English translation by John Spanton of Chevreul's ‘De la Loi du Contraste simultané des Couleurs,’ "one of the most influential treatises on color written during the nineteenth century." (DSB) Chevreul devised his principles less for scientists than for painters, designers, and decorators, formulating his general principle that the intensity and vigor of colors is dependent upon the hue of neighboring fabric rather than pigmentation of material.

"The neo-impressionist painters derived their methods of painting from Chevreul's principles. They found the scientific basis for the division of tones in Chevreul's principles of simultaneous contrast." (DSB)
