NOTE:

A student of his father, the marine painter Johannes Christian Schotel, Petrus Johannes Schotel specialized in painting ocean, harbor, and river scenes. His knowledge of the historic details of rigging and ships was reflected in his technical ability as a maritime artist. A teacher at the Dutch Royal Naval Institute at Medemblik, his paintings feature sailing ships, fishing boats, galleons, and frigates in a calm, as well as in rough or choppy seas, as in the present work.
