This is a very nice and complete United States Navy Mark V diving helmet breastplate. Dated April 1944 this was made by Morse Diving Equipment Company in Boston, MA. During this time period Morse began using lead identification plates on their Mark V helmets. Due to the soft metal many ID plates from this time period are damaged or hard to read. This example is actually in great condition with the stamps easy to distinguish. Oddly, Morse would put what is referred to as a lot number on the serial number pad on the ID plate. The helmets actual serial number was placed on the neck rings and four brails by Morse. This breastplate has the serial number 5761 on the neck ring and all four brails. The breastplate is in excellent condition with all four brails, twelve wingnuts, neck ring gasket and dumbbell safety latch and chain all present. It is not uncommon for Mark V bonnets to turn-up on occasion, but finding a nice complete breastplate can be very challenging.

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included.
