Description
1748 1ed Constantinople Byzantine Empire Etruscan Alphabet Hagia Sophia Map
The “Universal History” is a mid-18th-century history of the world. Written by numerous authors and contributors, this enormous set included more than 60 distinct volumes over the course of 20 years. Initially, the work was designed to provide Western Europe with anecdotes and histories from lesser-known cultures and parts of the world.
This rare sixteenth volume from the 1748 first edition focuses on the history of the Etruscan Empire as well as the history of Constantinople through the 4th-century reign of Emperor Julian. It includes an important discussion on the 395 AD split of the Roman Empire.
It includes impressive, folding engravings including an illustration of the Etruscan alphabet, a map of the Albania and Sumatra, views of Roman obelisks and Hippodrome, a view of the Hagia Sophia and the Thracian Bosporus (Strait of Istanbul).
