Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A lovely pair of tightly-woven textile fragments, either from natural cotton or camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers, in earthtone hues of brown, beige, cream, wheat, and chocolate. One textile is detailed with cross-hatching, cream-colored bands which surround interior areas of brown, and cream squares. The second fragment exhibits dozens of small rhombus forms outlined in white with interior designs resembling abstract anthropomorphic masks; a large cream-colored triangle is situated at one end of the textile. Mounted against a fabric-lined board within a wooden frame. Size of largest (masks): 15.625" W x 8.5" H (39.7 cm x 21.6 cm); size (frame): 19.75" W x 20.875" H (50.2 cm x 53 cm).

Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.

Both items are fragments of larger textiles. Each textile has some fading to pigmentation, loosening to some interior and peripheral threads, light staining, and losses around peripheries. Paper on verso of frame is slightly torn along the top. Frame mounted for suspension with two metal hoop screws and wire on verso.
