Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of a squat, spherical form resting atop a trio of squat, conical feet. Protruding from the rounded shoulder are three heads representing abstract zoomorphs, perhaps fish, and the flared rim surrounds the deep basin. Traces of red pigment are visible across the vessel, and faint remains of black stripes can be seen inside the rim. Size: 4.25" W x 3.6" H (10.8 cm x 9.1 cm)
Provenance: ex-private collection of the late Father Bader, University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, USA; exhibited in the University of St. Thomas Art Gallery, acquired prior to 2000

Condition
Nicks and pitting to body, legs, rim, and interior surfaces, with minor fading to original pigment, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice remains of original pigment throughout.
