Description
Pauwel Casteels was active in Antwerp around 1649 - 1677. It is not known when or where he died. It is all the more astonishing that he was and painted a versatile painter of cavalry battles and scenes with mythological, historical and biblical stories. Today his work is represented in many collections and museums. The Assumption of Mary, in radiant bright colors and great dynamism of the figures, are very much connected to the role models Peter Paul Ruben and Antonius Van Dyck. Nevertheless, Pauwel Casteels paints and designs his works, especially his figures, with their own formal language of facial expression and expression. According to Bert Schepers, Rubenianum, Antwerp, the present painting, The Assumption of Mary, represents a valuable addition to the oeuvre of the painter, who comes from an old Antwerp family of artists, and was previously unknown to research.
