James Stuart was a Scottish Lawyer, politician, and traveler who wrote the book ‘Three Years in North America’ based upon his travels through America having left Scotland after killing a man in a duel. His book is an account of his travels to various East Coast cities, traveled through Georgia and Alabama, then went west to Missouri and Illinois before heading back east, describing cities and states, the customs of people, as well as events of the time, including slavery. His book garnered negative attention from Britain for his favorable view of the Americans and their republic as well as a controversy with Sir John Lambert and Major Pringle for his account of the operations and conduct of the British army during the American campaign of 1814-15.
