A rare first edition printing of Charles Taylor’s account of his voyages in China. This book describes travels from Great Britain around the Cape of Good Hope, through India, into China. Taylor discusses the horrors of sea-sickness, encounters with sharks and flying-fish, arrival on Christmas Island, Java, and Sumatra.

While this book does describe the route and voyage to China, the majority of the work tells of Taylor’s discoveries and encounters in China including Hong Kong gardens, pagodas and tombs, city walls of Shanghai, working with missionaries, detailed descriptions of Chinese customs and clothing, encountering beggars and dead bodies, and an important section on the Chinese New Year!

Other topics include viewing eclipses, typhoons, and earthquakes, ancient ruins, and stopping at St. Helena (site of Napoleon’s imprisonment) on the voyage home.
