[In upper right corner: “Vol. 3, p. 565”; plate no. in lower right is 1.][In Wahrhaftige Ausführliche Beschreibung der Berühmten Ost-Indischen Küsten Malabar und Coromandel, Als auch der Insel Zeylon][By Philippus Baldaeus] [Published by Johannes Janssonius von Waasberge and Johannes von Someren][Amsterdam, 1672]29 cm x 35.5 cm Watermarked paper (with “foolscap” symbol, a jester’s head on a pole over a club-shaped trilobed symbol). Strong, clear print. Excellent condition. Very decorative baroque title frame in the lower left corner, topped with a reclining bearded South Asian in a loincloth with a bow in hand and flanked by two figures, a loin-cloth-clad local (on the left) standing on a bale and a robed, bearded, turbaned, figure holding a sword and a spiked shield. A scale is on the lower right, giving Dutch miles, Spanish leagues, and English and French leagues. It is topped with mapmakers’ implements, large calipers, scrolls of paper, and a measuring stick. Oriented with east at the top. A large compass rose radiating rhumb lines is in the middle of the Arabian Sea.Depicts the southwest coast of India on the Arabian Sea from southern Gujarat to around the southern tip of Tamil Nadu (Cape Comorin, Kanyakumari). Part of the Maldive Islands (labeled in English) are shown west of the southern Kerala coast (“Malabaer”). Depth soundings and some sandbars are noted around Gujarat and southern Tamil Nadu. Many coastal towns are recorded, the most prominent being Suratte, Bombaia, Goa, Cananor, Calichut, Crangenor, Cotchyn, Porca, Coulan, and Tutecoryn. Hills are depicted east of Kerala along with schematic forests. A camel with a rider and accompanying person on foot appears near Bombay (Bombaia), and two locals in loincloths with spears chase after two jaguars attacking another south of Goa.
