Antique Americana. A handwritten American Revolutionary War Era letter dated 1777, and bearing the signature of Col. James Vanderburgh (1729-1794), an American Patriot from Dutchess County, New York who served in the Continental Army. The letter is a request for wages to paid to seven army officers, Vanderburgh himself and others, including: Egbert Benson (1746-1833), a Founding Father, delegate to the 1788 New York State convention which ratified the United States Constitution, and member of the Committee for Detecting and Defeating Conspiracies, the nation's first intelligence service; and Jacobus Swartwout (1734–1827), an early American statesman who was close to many key Founding Fathers and a delegate to New York's convention to ratify the Constitution. Mounted on a decorative antique fabric matte within a protective plastic sleeve, and presented in the original circa 1964 Sotheby's Parke-Bernet auction gallery folder, with original auction lot information.
