Etching,13 3/4 x 9 1/2", signed in pencil, A Street in Charleston, Katherine Merrill (1876-1962) is a listed artist that was born in Milwaukee WI. She is most well-known for her etchings & her paintings done in the impressionist style. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago & at the New York Art Student League. She studied with many prominent artists including William Merritt Chase, Frederick Richardson, John Vanderpoel, Frank Duveneck, Albert Herter & William H. Low. She also studied in London with Frank Brangwyn.Katherine Merrill later taught at the New York Student Art League as well as at the South Carolina Museum of Art in Charleston. She became a prominent impressionist landscape artist in Sarasota FL during the c1930s, although she lived primarily in New York City.Eight of her works are in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. In addition to other museums, her work is also housed at the Newark NJ Public Library, Springfield IL Public Library & in the Art Department of Beloit College (Beloit, Wisconsin).
